The First of GodracIt was our ancestors who were among the first tribes to bend knee and pledge loyalty to Godrac the Invader. It was our ancestors who held down the Damerians during the Siege of Vertesk, allowing Godrac to swiftly seize the great fortress. And it was our ancestors who Godrac named “defenders of the South and the East” when the Gawedi kingdom rose.\n\nSince that day, a millennium has passed. Our fortunes have risen and fallen. Yet, no matter what may come, no Great Lord may deny that the sons of Gerwick remain steadfast to Godrac’s legacy.

Gerwick OutridersDuring the turmoil of the Greatwood Uprising in 1170, the Elven King of Arbaran, Ianren the Rider, seized the chance to invade Gawed and conquer the Alenic Expanse – capitalizing on the fact that the other Great Lords were preoccupied. But he forgot one thing: us. In response to this invasion, Rican Gerwick, as “Defender of the South and the East”, upheld the ancient Gerwick oath and swiftly took action.\n\nLeveraging the expansive grasslands and plains of the Alenic frontier, Rican quickly organized a force of light cavalrymen from the herders and pastoralists that resided there. Lightly armed with spears and shields, they were tasked with disrupting the advancing enemy forces and baiting them into disarray.\n\nThough none would know it, the coming battle would forge these stalwart defenders into Gerwick’s famed Outriders. In the centuries after, they would cement Rican’s legacy and leave Gerwick as the sole Gawedi people to heavily rely on cavalry tactics.

A Glimpse of HellWith no defensible position to hold, the people of Gerwick have adopted a brutal and drastic strategy to impede their enemies’ progress. This includes ordering the evacuation and destruction of nearby villages, along with the deliberate burning of crops and farmland. These actions deprive the enemy of vital supplies, and compel them to face the devastating consequences of their invasion. According to one of the few survivors of this strategy: ‘It was as if the Gawedi had placed the hells between us and the Alen.’\n\nAlthough Gerwick gained infamy for employing such harsh tactics, these sacrifices have allowed Gerwick to fight off invaders much larger by using their size against them – A starving army is a weak foe indeed.
+1 Attrition for Enemies

Heirs of RidersbaneThe battle of Alenfield in 1170 would prove to be pivotal in Gawedi history. The soon to be dubbed Outriders opened the battle bringing chaos to invading Arbarani lines and isolating their king. Seeing the opportunity given, Rican and his guards entered the fray, charging forth and facing down Ianren the Rider. The ensuing duel ended when the Great Lord sent his spear through Ianren’s heart, slaying the elf and earning Rican the name ‘Ridersbane’.\n\nWith Ianren dead, the Elfrealm’s army broke and fled south, bringing with them the realm’s eventual collapse into the Marquisate of Arbaran. As for Rican’s Outriders: They returned home and continued their lives, always watchful. Even today, many of the herders of the Alenic frontier keep one eye to the horizon, ever ready.

The Marcher's Oath“Let all who hear this know that until my last breath, I shall serve House Brasslance. I shall treat them as I would treat any of my kin, and steward the fields I have been given in their name, keeping the peace and ensuring just rule is kept.\n\nAnd in times of war, I shall ride with them on the field; whether in victory or defeat, I shall be their shield and spear, to protect Gawed and the Alen from the invaders. In the name of Godrac, I swear this oath.“\n– Gerwick blood oath

Grassland GuardiansIn Gerwick, our expansive grasslands afford us the privilege of owning vast herds of livestock. Here, animals roam freely, grazing peacefully under the open sky, watched over by herders. The people prefer this peace, and would do anything to keep it that way.\n\nThese men and women, trained to swiftly respond to any threat, stand ready to defend Gerwick and its people at a moment's notice. Whether it is safeguarding our borders or protecting our livelihoods, these people embody the spirit of resilience and vigilance that defines Gerwick.

The Boar HelmsAmongst those Outriders who have displayed greatest service, valor, and skill, the Boar Helms stand unparalleled. As the name suggests, their signature brass helmets are shaped in likeness of a ferocious boar’s head. The Boar Helms can often be seen at the head of Outrider charges, to the great dread of those about to be trampled.\n\nWhile the Outriders themselves came to be at the end of the 12th century, the Boar Helms were founded after the deposition of King Toman ‘the Mad’ Baldfather, in 1350. The first boar helm was commissioned by the newly crowned King Welyam I Gerwick, in honor of his brother and commander of the Outriders, Edmund Brasslance, who was said to be as fierce as a charging boar.
