Ascension Through ProsperityClematar’s rise to prominence was based on its strategic location. The city-state was built at the mouth of the Endioka river and the edge of the Tara’su Ervan lake, making it hard to attack from land or water. The rulers of Clematar used this advantage to develop the city’s infrastructure, turning it into a fortress of wealth and prosperity for its citizens who revered both conquerors and peacemakers, as long as they served the interests of their people. One such peacemaker was Dhekka Thalsury, who forfeited his life by surrendering to Erankar the Defiant and saving the city from a long and bloody siege by Larankar. His act of selflessness earned him eternal respect and gratitude from the Clematari, forever immortalising him.

The Boon of WarlordismClematar has always been a low-profile but opportunistic state. Unlike other Taychendi warlords, Clematar did not seek to expand its territory too much, avoiding major wars and conflicts. Instead, the Clematari focused on raiding weaker neighbours, such as Airoa Naditari, Sedregenhi, and Urvand after Larankar’s fall. They captured prisoners and slaves, and sold them to the highest bidder - usually merchants from Empkeios; a Kheionai city state with friendly relations to Clematar.

A Polearm a Day Keeps the Chendhayan AwayClematar’s army relied on a simple but effective strategy: forming a dense wall of lightly armoured spearmen that could resist any charge. This tactic gave them an edge over the fierce and unruly Taychendi, who often rushed headlong into battle. The adoption of the Ameioni phalanx formation was especially effective against the onslaught of Chendhayan mounted raiders, who soon learned to avoid them and look for easier prey. Clematari halberdiers were also in high demand by the slave traders who crossed the lake, as they could fend off the attacks of the Cargaraen pirates.

Crossroad Between RealmsClematar’s location made it a vital trade hub between Taychend and the Kheionai. The city was the main port on the Tara’su Ervan lake, which linked to Empkeios through the Agotham river. The increasing threat of Amgremós pirates forced many of the Taychendi goods destined for the Kheionai to pass through Clematar, giving the local merchants a large profit. The Ambhen Empire’s ban on slave trade and imposed serfdom on its subjects hurt Clematar’s economy, but after Ameion’s collapse, slave trade was restored and the trade route revived, allowing Taychendi slaves and goods to reach markets in North Aelantir, Insyaa and Haless.

Klereyen EliteClematar has always avoided war and conflict with the major powers, preferring to seek peaceful and beneficial compromises. In the early 1600s, Clematar became a part of the Ambhen Empire, but managed to secure a high level of autonomy and cultural freedom. Unlike other Taychendi states, Clematar was spared from Ameion’s attempts to Kheionise them and impose their culture and religion. The elite - a small class of Klereyen, who were the result of marriages between local Taychendi dynasties and Kheionai nobility - were among the few that blended the two cultures together.

Hanuk the ReformerHanuk, later known as "the Reformer" was the son of Thanel. He was a rebellious and outspoken youth, who hated his father’s decision to make Clematar a protectorate of Ameion. He joined many slaving raids, until he was wounded in the chest and nearly died. He miraculously survived, married an Ameioni noblewoman, and succeeded his father as the leader of the Clematari after his passing. He became a wise, level-headed ruler, managing to conquer parts of Sedregenhi, settling the now uninhabited Dugui’hi lands and establishing a parliamentary monarchy in Clematar. Some people believe he was visited by the Clematari God Heroes when he was injured and was granted a second chance at life. These myths earned him a loyal and devoted following.

Vanbury InfluenceClematar had few contacts with the Cannorians, due to its inland location and the Ameioni trade restrictions. When Vanbury Guild took over Empkeios in the 18th century, Clematar continued trading with these innovators, who paid a high price for Taychendi precursor relics. This had a high impact on the Clematari merchant class, who searched the Taychendi markets for relics to sell. In exchange, the Vanburian merchants shared some of their technological, cultural and artifical advancements, greatly boosting Clematar’s development.
